A Show of Hands is a sign language interpreting agency that provides 24- hour quality sign language services to the deaf and hard of hearing communities. Through their vision of providing quality services, Bobbie Jackson and Angelene Fowler, established A Show of Hands in 2000.
Whatever your situation, A Show of Hands can assist you by providing a professional sign language interpreter. Some of the agencies/businesses we serve would include medical/hospital appointments, staff meetings, corporations, small businesses, county, state, and Federal entities, educational settings, concerts, and Theatres. Our interpreters strictly follow the RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) Code of Ethics and assure that all information during interpreting assignments will be kept confidential.
In addition to providing interpreting services, A Show of Hands offers a variety of sign Language/ Interpreting workshops to Interpreters and students several times a year. We also provide training/mentoring in Theatrical interpreting.
Bobbie Jackson
Bobbie Jackson is an RID certified interpreter (CSC, CT, CI), interpreting since 1977, and Interpreter Trainer since 1983. She is also co-owner of A Show of Hands, A sign language interpreting agency. She has experience in teaching workshops on the RID Code of Ethics, Performing Arts Interpreting, Deaf-Blind interpreting, Oral Transmission, Transliterating, Certification Preparedness, working as a Team, and many other topics, she offers a wide range of skills, knowledge and experience. As an Interpreter Trainer, she loves teaching and learning ASL semantics, and multiple meaning words and signs.
Bobbie's expertise is in Theatrical Interpreting. Through the following years Bobbie has taken over 100 workshops, some lasting one day, others lasting 2 weeks to perfect her skills in this specialized area. Bobbie also worked with the National Theatre of the Deaf on several occasion, here in Sacramento and in Hartford, Connecticut, their home base. Now Bobbie teaches the class, Performing Arts Interpreting, at American River College, her alma mater and the beginning of a wonderful and challenging career.
Since the beginning of her career, Bobbie has continued to do local freelance interpreting, educational interpreting and working in all other venues where interpreting is needed to keep all her signing skilled balanced and honed. She continually strives to improve her interpreting, has read every book and article about performing arts and other interpreting, and is a certified interpreter with the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, holding the highest certificates available. Bobbie has interpreted over 300 plays, concerts, shows and formal lectures. She is reliable, loyal, punctual, professional, and always ready for a challenge.
Angelene Fowler
Angelene Fowler is an RID certified interpreter (CT, CI), interpreting since 1994. She is co-owner of A Show of Hands along with Bobbie. A Show of Hands is a sign language interpreting agency that not only provides interpreters, but also teaches a variety of workshops to sign language students and other interpreters.
Angelene is a freelance interpreter and specializes in medical, corporate, theatrical and educational interpreting. She continuously strives to improve her interpreting through ongoing trainings, workshops and conventions. She truly believes that the deaf patron and consumers come first and firmly adheres to the RID Code of Ethics.
Angelene trained under Bobbie Jackson and enhanced her skills working with Bobbie interpreting plays, concerts and live theatre. Angelene's love is in the theatre and live concerts. She has interpreted for Bette Midler, Bill Cosby, David Copperfield, Diana Ross, Englebert Humperdink, Smokey Robinson, Cathy Rigby, and Dolly Parton to name a few. Angelene interprets for The California Musical Theatre as well as Music Circus, The Sacramento Convention Center, and the Memorial Auditorium. Angelene has had years of training in this specialized field and worked with Bobbie the last 8 years, enhancing each other's styles, enjoying signing duets, and working on scripts together to improve the performance.
